This video resonates with me. I think that the recent increase in online counseling shows that EQ can translate through technology for some people. It does take a high level of observational skill and the empathy to reach others, but I disagree with Peters regarding low EQ people developing technology. There are many who create technology based on logical progression, then go about their daily lives with healthy EQ. Perhaps it is the process that needs to change?
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer. Thanks for your comment. I believe in an ideal world that a person would be able to teach EQ better than technology. However, we are far from an ideal world. Educators bring in their personal bias, their stresses from their personal lives, do not have the capacity to interact regularly and meaningfully 1:1. Yet the one area I am working to explore is how much will the learning from and through the technology transfer into an applied level in student’s lives.
DeleteAlso I agree with you that in the past technology may have been developed primarily by engineers but in todays environment is a very collaborative process. On our volunteer team we have academics, educators, marketing, UX/ UI, data analysts, etc. that provide input far before the software engineers get involved. Our team, especially for a startup, is more diverse (50%+ female, 70%+ diverse) ethnically, professionally, but perhaps it’s because we are more seasoned professionals.
