I am wondering what your appraisal of these examples might be? Having an app that does the SEL work for an individual might result in a person being less able to gain the SEL skills identified in the World Economic Forum article. Is this the real direction of SEL using technology?

Hey Michelle.
ReplyDeleteAddressing your specific question... I do not believe technology should substitute in the identification or development of SEL, unless that person is temporarily or permanently impaired. However, technologies can be used in assistive and developmental aides, such as for autistic individuals who might need a guide on determining people's facial expressions and their related emotions.
On a broader level, I cannot say how others may adopt or integrate SEL within technology. I can only highlight what I have seen and what we are working on. In general most of the emotional focused technology is not SEL focused. They claim to be SEL but since they are not developing a full pathway to the 5 frameworks of SEL, it is not SEL. Rather they are developing technologies that help student gain clam, do yoga, do dancing, etc. These are helpful but they are not academic, curricula framed, or SEL. Other efforts that are focusing on SEL technology, are fairly traditional. They are developing SEL curricula (standards based or not, academic or not) and integrating it technology.
However the approach we are taking is very different:
1. We integrate SEL within social studies, strengthening the value of each.
2. We meet all social studies curricula standards and SEL standards, and have a full academic curricula
3. We also adapt to learner's learning style and adapt on an emotional level
