Social-Emotional Learning: The Impact of Design in Instruction and Technology SECTION BREAK

Social-Emotional Learning: The Impact of Design in Instruction and Technology SECTION BREAK Universal Design for Instruction and Classroom Diversity Diversity and Universal Design for Instruction integrate well.  They are extremely important concepts and framework for today's diverse learners.  As with any concept, framework, or principle, it requires strong execution.   This requires awareness, desire, training, practice, and implementation.   UDI may take more thought and strategy but does not necessarily require more resources. It is much more about the approach and intentionality. UDI must first account for cultural values, socio-economic factors, and physical contexts (WBDG - Whole Building Design Guide, n.d.). The seven principles were updated with eight goals to "incorporate human performance, health and wellness, and social participation as outcomes, and ...

Classroom Diversity in an Age of Technology

Module 6 The world is getting increasingly more diverse.  The requirements to meet the needs of all individuals are also increasing.  Universal Design / Universal Design for Learning / Universal Design for Instruction are frameworks that help promote equity, access, and inclusion.  Learning about UD is a great foundation to develop effective classrooms, instruction, technologies, and tools.  It will provide a solid foundation for IDT and UX/UI design. Diversity is the recognition of that which makes us unique and individualized. In some cases, these differences are protected through laws to prevent discrimination based on these differences.  In a modern, civilized society, it is a desire to recognize and value differences.  Understanding each student's background and identity makes learning stronger for the individual and for the collective classroom.  In some studies, diverse classrooms outperformed higher-resourced homogenous student groups due...

Universal Design Principals

Module 5 Universal Design Principles allow additionally equitable access to learning for all learners, including a range of diverse learners.  Integrating UDL principles must be strategic, intentional, and throughout each phase from development to implementation.  If features are created but not implemented, value is lost.  It is an area that will continue to gain prominence and value in instructional design and technology.  It is a great foundation for classroom design, instructional strategies, and curricular design. Universal Design Principles At the Center for Universal Design (CUD) at North Carolina State University, a group of architects, product designers, engineers, and environmental design researchers established seven principles of UD to provide guidance in the design of products and environments (Connell, et al., 1997). The CUD’s principles of UD are listed below. They are followed by an example of application in instruction. 1. Equit...
